Events
January 22, 2008 Penny Carnival
Three
Martin Luther King Jr. penny carnivals took place Monday at
Church of Genesis in Mahoningtown, Clen-Moore Presbyterian Church
on Clen-Moore Boulevard and St. John United Holy Church on
Moravia Street.
Games
such as bowling, ball tosses and word finds were set up at each
site, and children paid one penny to participate in each.
Money
raised goes to help local low-income families to pay their
heating bills. Last year’s events raised $500.
“It’s
an opportunity for kids to have fun and, in the spirit of Martin
Luther King Day, to give something back,” Americorps
volunteer Nicole Filyo said. She was joined by other Americorp
members and volunteers from various intercultural programs at
Slippery Rock University.
Children
received tickets for participating in each game, which they could
exchange for prizes. Also, each site held a drawing for a pair of
$25 Wal-Mart gift cards.
There
also was time for food. At St. John, kitchen workers Ruth Bryant
and Elizabeth Adams served up hot dogs, potato chips and a snack.
