Gussie M. Walker Community Outreach Organization receives grants for after-school tutoring program for disadvantaged youth in the community.

The local non-profit organization of the Gussie M. Walker Community Outreach Organization in New Castle has received grants from the Caroline Knox Memorial Fund No 2 of The Pittsburgh Foundation and the Almira Foundation of the Community Foundation of Shenango Valley for their after-school tutoring program at Walker’s Neighborhood House.

Walker’s Neighborhood House is located in the basement of St. John United Holy Church, 1207 Moravia St. New Castle, Pa. College students from Westminster College come in throughout the week to tutor the children with their homework or study papers. The youth also have access to the computer lab to assist in reports and research needed for school. Once the homework and studying has been completed, the staff provides a meal for them. The hours of operation is from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. daily while school is in session, and from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in the summer. Walker’s Neighborhood House is open to the public without regard to race, color, religion, disability or economic situation. For more information concerning the Gussie M. Because of the $2,000 grant from the Almira Foundation, Walker’s Neighborhood House was able to surprise the youth with a beautiful Christmas party, which included multiple gifts of much needed school clothing and supplies along with some games and toys.

The $20,000.00 grant from the Caroline Knox Memorial Fund No. 2 of the Pittsburgh Foundation was received just in time to start the New Year. The amount received is for general operating support for Walker’s Neighborhood House. This grant makes it possible for the after-school tutoring program to continue to benefit the disadvantaged youth of our community for another year.
